Welcome back for the 2010-2011 school year! Religion class for 6th grade will be on Thursdays 10:45am-12:15pm and Fridays 10:45am-11:30am. Typically, readings and assignments will be assigned on Friday to be completed by the following Thursday.
Students will focus on Old Testament stories and themes. We will be using the 6th grade "We Believe" textbook as well as the Bible itself both for homework and classwork. Students should expect to use both books every Thursday and Friday in religion class. The NAB (New American Bible) translation of the bible is preferred, but other versions are fine. Some loaner bibles are available for in-class use. If a bible is unavailable at home, the bible is online at www.usccb.org/nab/bible.
Homework for 9/9:
Read Genesis chapter 2 and complete the "Details in Genesis 2 Worksheet".
Grading
40% Class Participation and homework
25% Quizzes
20% Community Service
15% Project
Class Participation and Homework:
Small written reflections or worksheets will accompany the reading each week as homework. This part of the grade is combined with class participation. Each day, students are awarded credit for good effort in class work, discussion, and keeping a collaborative attitude. In addition, students should expect to use their “We Believe” textbook as well as a bible each time we meet for class. Loaner bibles are available but should be retrieved before class starts.
Quizzes:
Weekly quizzes on Thursday will be the norm, with short-answer form being the most common.
Community Service:
9 hours for the trimester plus the appropriate paperwork need to be handed in before the end of each quarter. Broadly speaking, community service requires meeting a need in the wider community (outside one’s own home) without expectation of reward. Some service projects will be announced to the class. If a different project is required, students are expected to find their own project in order to complete the required hours. Ideas for community service should be approved by the teacher before the service begins.
Project:
Each trimester there will be a major project, based on material from class.
Late work:
1 day late, 50% credit. Afterward, no credit.
Extra credit:
Some extra credit opportunities may be announced to the class. In addition, attending the middle school youth group at St. Nicholas, the Crowd, will add 1% to the student’s final grade for each visit. Crowd meets Thursday night from 7:00-8:30 starting September 9.
